Ex-post Environmental Impact Statement

Preparation of an ex-post Environmental Impact Statement

The Republic of Austria and the EU Commission have agreed on future action regarding failure to fulfil agreed obligations following the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). This page contains the concept on which the agreement for an ex-post Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was based.

The agreement reached in March 2008 between the Republic of Austria and the EU Commission provisionally closes the debate as to whether an EIA should have been undertaken for all the construction projects started at Vienna Airport since 1999. It has now been agreed that an ex-post EIS will be drawn up and submitted for inspection by the relevant authorities and for public discussion in line with the basic features of an EIA as set forth in the EU’s EIA Directive.

The ongoing EIA for the construction of a third runway at Vienna Airport remains unaffected by this decision. This EIA procedure for a third runway was preceded by a voluntary mediation process lasting several years and involving citizens’ initiatives, environmental ombudsmen and the affected local communities, as well as the federal provinces of Vienna and Lower Austria. The parameters for the construction of a third runway agreed upon in the course of this process are reflected in the relevant Environmental Impact Statement and in the project itself.
