Vienna International Airport to be venue for 2011 Davis Cup
One of the biggest sporting events of the coming year will be staged at Vienna International Airport: the first round tie of the Davis Cup World Group between Austria and France will take place right at Vienna International Airport ? in a real aircraft hangar ? from 4 to 6 March 2011. Tennis stars like the Austrians Jürgen Melzer and Andreas Haider-Maurer and the French superstars Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon will guarantee plenty of sporting action.
Hangar 3 will be adapted specially for this event, and equipped with a sand court by Tennis Austria (ÖTV, the Austrian tennis association). The location offers seating for an audience of about 6,000 spectators, and is approximately as large as 38 tennis courts. Vienna International Airport has undertaken to provide the hangar, and will support the logistic management of the event in all processes relating to the airport. Tennis Austria will be responsible for adapting the venue for the Davis Cup tournament, as well as for organizing the event. After this sports event, the hangar will once again be used for carrying out aircraft maintenance.
Vienna International Airport is much more than just a traffic hub: with 55,000 passengers a day and 18,000 employees on site, this is a place charged with emotion and achievement. In the future we intend to place even greater emphasis on these elements of the airport, developing new ideas and thereby enhancing our positioning. We claim to offer our target groups ? from travellers to airlines and all those interested in our airport ? the highest quality of service, an unrivalled experience and optimal performance compared to our competitors. Holding this top-ranking sporting event here at Vienna International Airport is a first in the history of our company, and underlines our positioning strategy, explains Peter Kleemann, press spokesman for Flughafen Wien AG.
