Vienna Airport: Plus 23.6% in passengers during April 2011

Strong growth due to effects of the volcanic ash cloud in past year

 

The number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport rose by 23.6% year-on-year to 1,726,014 in April 2011.

 

Growth was also recorded in flight movements with plus 10.3%, maximum take-off weight (MTOW) with plus 15.2% and cargo with plus 0.3%. The number of transfer passenger rose by 20.6% in comparison with April 2010.

 

Passenger traffic to destinations in Eastern Europe was 36.0% higher than in April 2010, and the number of passengers travelling to Western Europe increased 29.3%. An increase of 20.0% was recorded in travel to the Middle East during April 2011.

 

The strong year-on-year growth recorded in April 2011 is related to the effects of the volcanic ash cloud on European air travel and the related decline in traffic during April 2010. For 2011 Flughafen Wien AG is forecasting an increase of 5.0% in passengers, 3.0% in maximum take-off weight (MTOW) and 2.0% in flight movements.
