Environmental Impact Statement
EIS shows: 3rd runway can be built and operated in an environmentally sound manner
The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was submitted to the authorities by the project applicant Vienna International Airport together with the application for approval: 20 expert teams had prepared a total of 39 expert reports on topics such as aircraft noise, air pollutants, ecology, etc. Each expert report presents in detail what effects can be expected from the construction of a third runway at Vienna International Airport. Each expert report presents in detail the impacts to be expected from the construction of a third runway at Vienna Airport and contains measures to reduce these impacts.
Ecology
In order to enhance the habitat and minimise the impact of the interventions in the course of the project, a "landscape management plan" is implemented, which takes into account the requirements of the natural environment and ensures the protection of nature and biotopes during the realisation of the 3rd runway. For this purpose, terrain modelling and planting (creation of near-natural habitats, of guidance and guiding facilities for wildlife, etc.) are planned.
In total, landscape conservation and ecological accompanying measures will be implemented on approx. 5 million m². For the forest areas to be cleared in the course of the terrain adjustment measures, replacement afforestation areas in a ratio of 1:3 are taken into account in the project; i.e. for 1 m² of cleared forest area, 3 m² will be afforested.
Air pollutants
The construction of a 3rd runway at Vienna Airport does not lead to any significant increase in immissions. The additional pollution during the construction phase is negligible. In the operational phase, there will even be lower NOx, CO, SO2, benzene and PM10 emissions compared to 2003, despite the forecast increase in traffic volume by 2020 and 2025 respectively, due to stricter exhaust standards, lower specific fuel consumption and changes in the fleet composition.
