Preparations underway for Davis Cup 2011 at Vienna International Airport
One of the most important sport events of the year will take place from 4 to 6 March 2011 in an aircraft hangar at Vienna International Airport - the first-round duel between Austria and France in the Davis Cup World Group. Up to 5,000 visitors are expected each day. The necessary preparations are currently underway at full speed.
Extensive modifications will be made to the hangar, which will be used as a maintenance hall for aircraft shortly before and immediately after this sport event. This approx. 10,000 m² hall - which is roughly the size of 38 tennis courts - is normally used for maintenance and repairs on aircraft like the Boeing 777. For this special event, it will be transformed into a tennis stadium with a complete infrastructure: stands with nearly 5,000 seats, 17 booths for commentators, dressing rooms for the players, gastronomy facilities for spectators and lighting will be installed starting next week.
A special traffic concept has been developed for this tennis event. Visitors travelling by car can use the Mazur car park directly adjoining the hangar for EUR 5 per day. Arriving guests can reach this parking area through the A4 intersection in Schwechat, while departing traffic will leave via the autobahn connection to the airport. Visitors travelling with public transportation or the City Airport Train (CAT) will be provided with shuttle bus service from the CAT/S7 station at Vienna International Airport to the Mazur parking lot. From the Mazur car park, visitors will be transported to and from the tennis arena in continuous shuttle bus transfers. The tennis arena will open at 1 pm on 4 and 5 March and at 12.30 pm on 6 March. The airport hangar will be transformed into a public area during the entire event, i.e. there will be no security controls for visitors. However, security concerns will not permit individual access to the hangar.
For Flughafen Wien, this Davis Cup match at the airport is a highlight in Viennas history - and proof that an airport can be more than just a traffic hub. Vienna International Airport is the starting or ending point for 55,000 passengers each day, while 18,000 employees at the airport site guarantee smooth operations. Accordingly, Vienna International Airport - like the Davis Cup - symbolises a full range of emotions and top performance. By hosting this top-flight event, Flughafen Wien underscores its claim to offer all target groups - from travellers to the airlines and aviation fans - unparalleled service, a tremendous high-level experience and best performance in competition.
