Flughafen Wien: resurfacing work on runways 11/29 and 16/34
Maintenance work will be carried out on runways 11/29 and 16/34 at Vienna Airport on up to 17 nights during the period from 15 June to 12 August 2011. The actual scheduling
will depend on the wind and weather conditions, whereby a decision will be made each day during the afternoon as to whether
work can be carried out the following night. Work will alternate between the two runways, depending on wind conditions.
Work on runway 11/29 will be carried out from 10 pm to 6 am and result in the shift of flight operations to runway 16/34. The closing of runway 11/29 will lead to deviations from the
night flight rule in the approach and departure sections of runway 16/34 that are located in the province of Lower Austria.
The communities to the east and south of Vienna Airport (e.g. Kleinneusiedl, Enzersdorf, Margarethen/Moos and Schwadorf) will be affected by take-offs and landings, depending on the direction of the wind. Westerly winds will require the use of
a route over the community of Großenzersdorf for take-offs, contrary to the established night flight rules. The work on runway 16/34 will only be carried out under westerly winds; the runway will then be closed from 9 pm to 7 am.
Runway 16/34 is not used during these hours because of the night flight rule, and there will be no deviations from usual operations
under normal circumstances. In order to minimise the disturbance for residents, no work will be carried out on the nights from Saturday to Monday.
In addition to resurfacing work on the runway areas, this project also includes the testing and maintenance of electro-technical
equipment, cleaning of the drainage systems, work on the runway marking and the removal of rubber abrasion. This precautionary maintenance is particularly important for Vienna Airport to avoid sudden unplanned runway closures and
to ensure safe flight operations.
