The strong growth trend is continuing at the beginning of the year. The total number of passengers handled by the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) in January 2019 climbed by 20.0% to 2.2 million travellers. Vienna Airport reported a substantial increase in passenger volume of 24.4%.
Vienna Airport: Very strong growth of passenger volume and flight movements
The number of passengers handled at Vienna Airport in the month of January 2019 rose by 24.4% compared to the prior-year month to 1,830,923 travellers. The number of local passengers increased sharply by 30.6%, and transfer passenger volume was up by 6.2%. The number of flight movements in January 2019 also showed a substantial increase of 15.3% year-on-year. Cargo volume at Vienna Airport dropped slightly by 2.8% from the comparable level of January 2018.
The total number of passengers at Vienna Airport flying to destinations in Western Europe climbed by 24.0% in January 2019, and passenger traffic to Eastern Europe rose by 26.0%. In January 2019, the number of passengers travelling to the Far East increased by 16.2% from the prior-year month, and passenger volume to Middle Eastern destinations climbed by 19.3%. Passenger volume to North America also developed positively, rising by 33.5% in January 2019, and the number of passengers travelling to Africa was up 43.4% year-on-year.
Malta Airport reported an increase in passenger volume of 4.1% in the month of January 2019, whereas Kosice Airport registered a decline of 11.4% in the number of passengers it handled.
