Environmental impact authority approves the Flughafen Wien AG application on extending the implementation deadline until 30
June 2033
As stipulated in an official notification dated 26 May 2023, the responsible environmental impact authority of the Provincial Government of Lower Austria formally approved the application submitted by the Vienna Airport operating company Flughafen Wien AG to extend the implementation deadline for the third runway project until 30 June 2033.
The decision was in line with the findings and assessments of the expert involved. The extension of the deadline enables the Vienna Airport to align planning for the construction period of the third runway to the actual development of flight traffic as well as profitability. In this regard, a precise point in time for beginning construction work cannot yet be specified. In any case, Vienna Airport continues to actively pursue the third runway project on the basis of the incontestable notice of approval.
The third runway project was already definitively and legally approved by the highest courts on 17 February 2020. The unforeseeably long duration of the appeal proceedings lasting until February 2020 as well as the unpredictable coronavirus pandemic which largely paralysed flight traffic for more than two years starting in 2020, shortly after the authorisation granted by the highest courts, had a severe adverse effect on planning work.
The year 2023 is once again triggering a significant increase in flight traffic. The current forecast for 2023 shows flight movements to be at about 75% and passenger volume at more than 80% of the comparable level in the record year 2019.
