August 2023 Traffic Results: 4,084,286 passengers handled by the Flughafen Wien Group and 3,103,842 by Vienna Airport – Passenger volume almost at the pre-crisis level in the holiday month of August
 
Following a strong performance in July, the number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport in the month of August 2023 also came close to matching the pre-crisis level. In August 2023, passenger volume in the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) was up 14.1% to 4,084,286 travellers, whereas passenger traffic at Vienna Airport climbed 12.1% to 3,103,842 travellers compared to the prior-year month of August 2022. Accordingly, the passenger volume in the Group and at Vienna Airport was 100.4% and 98.5% respectively of the August 2019 level – and thus Vienna Airport handled almost as many passengers as in the year before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
 
The number of local passengers at Vienna Airport rose to 2,343,709 (+17.5%), whereas transfer passenger traffic fell to 751,962 travellers (-2.1%). The number of flight movements in August 2023 increased to 21,676 starts and landings (+9.2%). Cargo volume was up slightly by 0.7% from August 2022 to 19,797 tonnes.
 
Details on passenger traffic
Passenger traffic from Vienna Airport to Western Europe rose to 1,052,332 travellers in August 2023, an increase of 9.4% compared to the prior-year month. The number of passengers flying to Eastern Europe in August 2023 amounted to 252,727 travellers (+12.1%). Vienna Airport reported a total of 53,300 passengers flying to North America (-+2.4%) and 25,556 (-+9.9%) to Africa. Passenger traffic to destinations in the Middle East equalled 107,545 travellers in August 2023 (+33.0%), whereas the number of passengers flying to East Asia reached to a total of 42,653 (+116.3%) in the month of August 2023. 
 
Passenger traffic registered by the strategic investments of Flughafen Wien AG in August 2023 already surpassed the pre-crisis level. Malta Airport reported a rise in passenger volume in August 2023 to 878,462 travellers (+23.4%), or 6.7% higher than the pre-crisis level of August 2019. Kosice Airport handled 101.982 passengers (+3.5%) in August 2023, thus 9.0% above the comparable pre-crisis level.
