September 2023 Traffic Results: 3,801,022 passengers handled by the Flughafen Wien Group and 2,919,579 by Vienna Airport – Passenger volume in September 2023 only slightly below the pre-crisis level
 
Following a strong summer season, the number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport in the month of September 2023 was only slightly below the pre-crisis level. In September 2023, passenger volume in the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) was up 12.7% to 3,801,022 travellers, whereas passenger traffic at Vienna Airport climbed 10.1% to 2,919,579 travellers compared to the prior-year month of September 2022. Accordingly, the passenger volume in the Group and at Vienna Airport was 99.9% and 98.1% respectively of the September 2019 level – and thus the number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport was only slightly less than in the year before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
 
The number of local passengers at Vienna Airport rose to 2,212,441 (+15.5%), whereas transfer passenger traffic fell slightly to 702,008 travellers (-3.5%). The number of flight movements in September 2023 showed a increase to 20,729 take-offs and landings (+6.3%). Cargo volume was down by 5.1% from September 2022 to 20,209 tonnes.
 
Details on passenger traffic
Passenger traffic from Vienna Airport to Western Europe rose to 994,705 travellers in September 2023, comprising an increase of 8.0% compared to the prior-year month. The number of passengers flying to Eastern Europe in September 2023 amounted to 225,877 travellers (+3.6%). Vienna Airport reported a total of 49,085 passengers flying to North America (+0.5%) and 24,852 (+26.9%) to Africa. Passenger traffic to destinations in the Middle East equalled 90,581 travellers in September 2023 (+33.8%), whereas the number of passengers flying to East Asia climbed to 39,416 (+101.5%) in the month of September 2023. 
 
Passenger traffic registered by the strategic investments of Flughafen Wien AG in September 2023 already surpassed the pre-crisis level. Malta Airport reported a rise in passenger volume in September 2023 to 812,176 travellers (+23.3%), or 6.5% higher than the pre-crisis level of September 2019. Kosice Airport handled 69,267 passengers (+11.8%) in September 2023, thus 9.3% above the comparable pre-crisis level.
