Following a very strong month in July 2024, the number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport once again exceeded the pre-crisis level in August 2024, rising by 8.7% to 4,439,823 travellers in the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport). The number of passengers at Vienna Airport was up 7.3% to 3,331,345 travellers compared to the prior-year month. The individual month of August 2024 showed the highest passenger volume of any month in the history of Vienna Airport and was 5.7% above the pre-crisis level of August 2019. With 6,655,441 passengers at Vienna Airport in July and August 2024, Vienna Airport set a new summer travel season record.
The number of local passengers at Vienna Airport in August 2024 rose to 2,575,690, comprising a rise of 9.9% compared to the prior-year month. Transfer passenger traffic was down slightly by 0.7% to 746,656 travellers. The number of flight movements in August 2024 increased 5.1% year-on-year to 22,785 take-offs and landings. Cargo volume equalled 24,048 tonnes, up 21.5% from August 2023.
Details on passenger traffic in August 2024
Passenger traffic from Vienna Airport to Western Europe rose to 1,147,430 passengers in August 2024, comprising an increase of 9.0% from the previous year. The number of passengers flying to Eastern Europe in August 2024 amounted to 278,153 travellers (+10.1%). Vienna Airport reported a total of 59,811 passengers flying to North America (+12.2%), and 30,383 to Africa (+18.9%). Passenger traffic to destinations in the Middle East totalled 74,171 travellers (-31.0%), whereas passenger volume to the Far East climbed to 53,351 travellers, an increase of 25.1%.
The strategic investments of Flughafen Wien AG also developed very well. Passenger volume at Malta Airport rose 11.9% to 983,182 travellers in August 2024. Kosice Airport handled a total of 125,296 passengers, showing a strong increase of 21.4% from the prior-year month.
Cumulative passenger traffic in the period January to August 2024: +7.5% in Vienna and +9.5% in the Flughafen Wien Group
Total passenger traffic at Vienna Airport from January to August 2024 rose by 7.5% year-on-year to a cumulative figure of 21,041,772 passengers, corresponding to 0.3% above the pre-crisis level (2019). Cargo volume at Vienna Airport was up 18.8% to 190,814 tonnes in the period January-August 2024. The Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) reported a 9.5% rise in passenger volume to 27,567,753 travellers in the first eight months of 2024.
