Vienna Airport: New CT scanners at security checkpoints in all terminals operational as of Friday, 3rd July 2026

Vienna Airport: New CT scanners at security checkpoints in all terminals operational as of Friday, 3rd July 2026

More convenience for passengers at Vienna Airport: As of Friday, 3rd July 2026, the new CT scanners will be in operation at the central security checkpoints in all terminals. From this date, all departing passengers will be able to leave electronic devices such as laptops and mobile phones, as well as liquids, in their hand luggage during security screening. In addition, an extended liquids regulation will apply at Vienna Airport from 3 July: liquids with a volume of up to two litres may be carried in hand luggage. In total, Vienna Airport is investing around €25 million in the transition to the new CT technology, with 35 units purchased for this purpose. The new CT scanners will also be used in the new Terminal 3 southern expansion, which is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2027.

„Our passengers already benefit from an average waiting time of only around five minutes at the security checkpoints – a top performance by European standards. With the full commissioning of the new CT scanners, we are making security checks significantly easier and more efficient just in time for the start of the holiday season. This modern technology simplifies the process for our passengers and enhances the quality of security screening. In doing so, we are taking another important step towards positioning Vienna Airport as one of the most modern and convenient hubs in Europe. Nevertheless, due to the high volume of travel expected on the first holiday weekend, we recommend that passengers allow a little more time for check-in, security screening and any necessary border controls, and arrive at the airport slightly earlier “, says Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport.

State-of-the-art computed tomography provides detailed 3D images
As part of a comprehensive modernisation project, all central security lanes in all terminals at Vienna Airport have been equipped with new CT scanners. As of Friday, 3rd July 2026, this rollout will be completed across the airport – and from Friday morning, all departing passengers at Vienna Airport will experience the benefits of the new technology. A total of 35 new units have been purchased, representing an investment volume of around €25 million. The new CT scanners will also be used in the new Terminal 3 southern expansion, which is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2027. The new devices use computed tomography to generate detailed 3D images of hand luggage. This provides security staff with all relevant information about a piece of baggage in a single display. In addition, intelligent algorithms support the detection of solid and liquid explosives, while alarms are displayed directly on the monitors in relation to the specific object concerned.

Passenger information: CT scanners not available at all airports and occasional additional checks possible
For travellers, security screening will become significantly more convenient: electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops, as well as liquids with a volume of up to two litres, may remain in hand luggage and no longer need to be removed separately. However, individual items such as food, creams, honey, jams or thermos flasks may trigger additional checks. Even though liquids of up to two litres will be permitted in hand luggage in future, passengers are advised to carry liquids in smaller containers wherever possible. Experience has shown that these are less likely to require additional checks and help ensure a smoother process at security screening. Since not all airports have introduced CT scanners yet, passengers are also advised to check the current regulations at their respective destination or transfer airport. In view of the high passenger volume expected during the first holiday weekend, Vienna Airport recommends that travellers allow a little more time for travelling to the airport and for travel formalities such as check-in, security screening and border controls.
