Total passenger volume from January to August 2026: Growth of 1.1% to 28,973,097 travellers in the Flughafen Wien Group
Summer travel volumes at Vienna Airport remain high: 6.3 million passengers from July to August 2026 – 35 days with more than 100,000 passengers – busiest day: 1 August 2026 with 110,414 passengers
The Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) reported a slight decline of 1.7% in passenger traffic in the month of August 2026 compared to the previous year, handling a total of 4,526,965 travellers. The number of passengers at Vienna Airport in August 2026 decreased as expected, falling strongly by 6.9% to 3,172,284 travellers. This downward development can be attributed to the reduction of low-cost carrier capacities and the reduced flight offering related to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. In contrast, Malta Airport reported a 12.3% increase in passenger traffic in August 2026 to 1,204,465 travellers and Kosice Airport registered strong growth of 18.8% to 150,216 passengers. In the period January to August 2026, passenger volumes in the entire Flughafen Wien Group were up by 1.1% to 28,973,097 travellers.
Flughafen Wien Group handles 4.5 million passengers (-1.7%) in August 2026
In August 2026, the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) handled a total of 4,526,965 passengers, comprising a 1.7% decrease compared to August 2025. Passenger volume at Malta Airport climbed by 12.3% to 1,204,465 travellers in August 2026, and Kosice Airport registered an increase of 18.8% to 150,216 passengers.
Vienna Airport: 3.2 million passengers (-6.9%) in August 2026
Total passenger volume at Vienna Airport equalled 3,172,284 travellers (-6.9%) in the month of August 2026.
Traffic development in detail
The number of local passengers at Vienna Airport fell by 7.1% from the prior-year month to 2,438,089 travellers in August 2026, whereas transfer passenger traffic declined by 3.8% to a total of 726,134. The number of flight movements in August 2026 was down 6.0% to 21,839 take offs and landings. The seat load factor remained at a very high level of 85.6% (-0.8%p vs. August 2025). Cargo volume totalled 27,513 tonnes, comprising a year on year rise of of 8.3%.
In August 2026, passenger traffic from Vienna Airport to Western Europe equalled 1,108,901 travellers, a 3.2% decline from the prior-year month. The number of passengers flying to Eastern Europe in August 2026 amounted to 231,813 travellers (-19.2%). Vienna Airport reported a total of 55,966 passengers flying to North America (-2.8%) and 31,468 travellers to Africa (+4.3%). Passenger traffic to the Middle East region showed a 12.9% decrease to 75,222 travellers in August 2026. In contrast, the number of passengers flying to destinations in the Far East climbed 8.3% to 66,394 travellers.
Accumulated passenger volumes January to August 2026: -4.0% at Vienna Airport and +1.1% in the Flughafen Wien Group
The total number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport in the eight-month period January-August 2026 fell by 4.0% from the previous year to the accumulated figure of 20,568,204 travellers. Cargo volume rose by 1.1% to 209,803 tonnes. Passenger volume in the entire Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) increased by 1.1% during this period to 28,973,097 travellers.
Summer travel: 6.3 million passengers in Vienna and 9.0 million in the Flughafen Wien Group
Despite an overall downward development, passenger volumes in the summer travel season remained at a high level. In the months of July and August 2026, Vienna Airport registered a total of 6,300,460 passengers (-5.8% compared to the previous year). In the same period, the entire Flughafen Wien Group handled 8,997,705 passengers (-0.7%). Vienna Airport reported a total of 35 days, in which it recorded more than 100,000 passengers. The busiest day in the summer was Saturday, August 1, 2026, marked by 110,414 travellers at Vienna Airport.
