Total passenger volume from January to September 2026: Growth of 0.7% to 33,111,562 travellers in the Flughafen Wien Group
The Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) reported a slight decline of 2.0% in passenger traffic in the month of September 2026 compared to the previous year, handling a total of 4,138,465 travellers. The number of passengers at Vienna Airport in September 2026 decreased as expected, declining notably by 7.5% to 2,910,597 travellers. This downward development is mainly attributable to the reduction of the flight offering on the part of low-cost carriers as well as the decline in the number of flight connections as a consequence of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. In contrast, Malta Airport reported a 12.0% increase in passenger traffic in September 2026 to 1,109,789 travellers and Kosice Airport registered strong growth of 32.2% to 118,079 passengers. In the period January to September 2026, passenger volume in the entire Flughafen Wien Group rose by 0.7% to 33,111,562 travellers.
Flughafen Wien Group handles 4.1 million passengers (-2.0%) in September 2026
In September 2026, the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) handled a total of 4,138,465 passengers, comprising a 2.0% decrease compared to September 2025. Passenger volume at Malta Airport climbed by 12.0% to 1,109,789 travellers in September 2026, and Kosice Airport registered a sharp increase of 32.2% to 118,079 passengers.
Vienna Airport: 2.9 million passengers (-7.5%) in September 2026
Total passenger volume at Vienna Airport equalled 2,910,597 travellers (-7.5%) in the month of September 2026.
Traffic development in detail
The number of local passengers at Vienna Airport fell by 7.9% from the prior-year month to 2,238,344 travellers in September 2026, whereas transfer passenger traffic declined by 5.4% to a total of 660,224. The number of flight movements in September 2026 was down 6.6% to 21,008 take-offs and landings. The seat load factor equalled 82.4% (-0.3%p vs. September 2025). Cargo volume totalled 28,180 tonnes, comprising a year on year rise of of 9.5%.
In September 2026, passenger traffic from Vienna Airport to Western Europe equalled 1,207,510 travellers, down 8.3% from the prior-year month. The number of passengers flying to Eastern Europe in September 2026 amounted to 213,239 travellers (-16.0%). Vienna Airport reported a total of 54,023 passengers flying to North America (-1.2%) and 26,068 travellers to Africa (-2.2%). Passenger traffic to the Middle East region showed a 28,0% decrease to 57,430 travellers. In contrast, the number of passengers flying to destinations in the Far East climbed 6.5% from the previous year to 58,272 travellers.
Accumulated passenger volumes January to September 2026: -4.5% at Vienna Airport and +0.7% in the Flughafen Wien Group
The total number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport in the nine-month period of January to September 2026 fell by 4.5% from the previous year to the accumulated figure of 23,478,801 travellers. Cargo volume rose by 2.0% to 237,983 tonnes. Passenger volume in the entire Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) increased by 0.7% during this period to 33,111,562 travellers.
